Text Aligner for the ULT - Job Description

Location of Job: Orlando, FL or Remote

Position Summary: The Text Aligner for the unfoldingWord Literal Text (ULT) will use the translationCore (tC) software to align the English text of the ULT with the Greek source text.

General Responsibilities:

  • Learning the translationCore software

  • Aligning the English text of the ULT with the unfoldingWord Greek New Testament (UGNT).

Expanded Description: The Text Aligner for the Unlocked Literal Text (ULT) will use the translationCore software to align the English text of the ULT with the Unlocked Greek New Testament (UGNT). Ideally, there would be one English word aligned with each Greek word. Of course, this is not possible, because languages work very differently from each other. Therefore, the Text Aligner will align words or phrases in the ULT with words or phrases in the Greek that differ in the number of words, order of words, and parts of speech. Always, however, the Aligner will align the English words to the Greek words whose meaning they express, in whatever combination is necessary to produce the most accurate alignment of the meaning. These alignments will be used to enable various translation helps in the Bible translation software.

Qualifications:

  • Personal relationship with Jesus Christ
  • Good Bible knowledge
  • Ability to read biblical Greek with good understanding of Greek grammar
  • Facility with using computers
  • Availability of a reliable and reasonably-fast Internet connection
  • Can work at least 10 hours per week, starting June 2018

Text Aligner for the UST - Job Description

Location of Job: Orlando, FL or Remote

Position Summary: The Text Aligner for the UST will use the translationCore software to align the English text of the unfoldingWord Simplified Text (UST) with the Greek source text.

General Responsibilities:

  • Learning the translationCore software

  • Aligning the English text of the UST with the Greek text of the unfoldingWord Greek New Testament (UGNT)

Expanded Description: The Text Aligner for the Unlocked Simplified Text (UST) will use the translationCore software to align the English text of the UST with the Unlocked Greek New Testament (UGNT). The UST is a carefully designed text to be used by Bible translators as a translation resource. It expresses the Greek text using certain simplified grammatical forms, shorter sentences, and plain rather than figurative language. In addition, the UST includes information in the text that the original audience would have known and that was deemed necessary for understanding. Because of these things, the Aligner for the UST will need to think carefully about which parts of the UST are expressing which parts of the UGNT. There will not be a word-for-word or even clause-for-clause correspondence.

  • Good understanding of English grammar
  • Experience in Bible translation
  • Good understanding of translation principles
  • Ability to follow instructions with attention to detail
  • Facility with using computers
  • Availability of a reliable and reasonably-fast Internet connection
  • Can work at least 10 hours per week, starting June 2018
